Parapsychology is the study of strange and unusual experiences that seem to sit just outside what mainstream science can currently explain. It explores ideas such as mind reading (telepathy), seeing or sensing things from far away (clairvoyance), predicting the future (precognition), moving objects with the mind (psychokinesis), and experiences involving ghosts, apparitions, and near-death experiences.

But parapsychologists aren’t simply people who watch scary movies and shout, “Ghosts are real!” Many try to investigate these unusual claims using careful research. They run experiments, collect reports, look for patterns, and ask whether an experience could be explained by coincidence, imagination, memory, or something else.

For example, researchers might test whether someone can guess hidden cards more accurately than would be expected by chance. They may also interview people who say they have experienced something unusual and carefully record what happened.

Not everyone in science believes that paranormal phenomena are real, and many scientists remain highly sceptical of parapsychology. Parapsychologists are aware of this criticism — and some are sceptical too.

What keeps them investigating is curiosity.

Could the human mind do things we don’t fully understand yet? Could some strange experiences have ordinary explanations that we simply haven’t discovered? Or could there be something genuinely unusual going on?
